What it governs
The Life palace — 命宫, Ming Gong, often simply "the Ming" — is where a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart begins. Its position is fixed first, from your birth month and hour, and every other palace is counted out from it. What sits here is the closest the chart comes to a portrait of you: your temperament, your instincts under pressure, the direction your life keeps bending toward.
Because it anchors the chart, the Life palace is read before anything else. A strong, bright star here gives the whole chart a spine; an empty Life palace borrows its character from the palace opposite, and reads as a life shaped more by circumstance than by will.
It is not the whole story. The Life palace says who you are; the eleven palaces around it say where that self meets the world.
